Ask ten bowhunters what makes an arrow hit hard and fly straight, and you'll hear the same three letters over and over: FOC. Front of Center is one of the most talked-about — and most misunderstood — numbers in arrow building. This guide covers what FOC actually is, how it's calculated, what the research and field experience say about ideal ranges, and exactly how to move your number where you want it.
What Is FOC?
Front of Center (FOC)is the percentage of your arrow's length by which its balance point sits in front of its physical center. An arrow with 0% FOC would balance exactly at its midpoint. An arrow with 15% FOC balances noticeably toward the point end.
Think of a dart. Nearly all of a dart's weight is in the nose, which is why it flies point-first and stable even when thrown with imperfect form. An arrow works the same way: mass concentrated up front pulls the arrow through the air while the light rear end — steered by the fletching — trails obediently behind it.
The FOC Formula
The standard formula compares the balance point to the arrow's center:
Both measurements are taken from the nock groove to keep things consistent. To measure a finished arrow at home:
- Measure your arrow's total length from the nock groove to the end of the shaft (or to the point shoulder on a finished arrow).
- Balance the arrow on a thin edge — a ruler on its side works — and mark the balance point.
- Measure from the nock groove to that mark, plug both numbers into the formula.

Why FOC Matters
Flight stability
A front-heavy arrow recovers from launch flex faster and resists being pushed around in flight. This matters most with broadheads: a fixed blade up front acts like a rudder, and the more front-heavy the arrow, the less leverage that rudder has to steer the arrow off course.
Penetration
On impact, the mass up front keeps driving forward instead of flexing the shaft and bleeding energy. Combined with the higher total arrow weight that usually comes with raising FOC, this is why heavy, high-FOC builds are the go-to recipe for elk, moose, and anything with heavy bone.
Wind drift
Higher-FOC arrows tend to hold their line better in a crosswind, because the light tail gets blown around more easily than the heavy nose — and the tail correcting behind the nose is exactly how an arrow is designed to fly.
What's a Good FOC?
- Under 7% — too low for most purposes; flight gets squirrelly, especially with broadheads.
- 7–10% — common for target and 3D setups where flat trajectory wins and penetration doesn't matter.
- 10–15% — the sweet spot where most bowhunters land: stable broadhead flight, good penetration, manageable trajectory.
- 15–20% — high FOC. Popular for big game; excellent penetration with a modest trajectory penalty at longer range.
- 20%+ — ultra-high FOC, dedicated deep-penetration builds. Usually paired with heavy total arrow weight and requires careful spine selection.
Trade-off to remember:raising FOC almost always raises total arrow weight, which lowers arrow speed and steepens trajectory. That's a fair trade inside typical hunting distances — momentum kills, and yardage is known — but be honest about the ranges you shoot.
How to Raise (or Lower) Your FOC
To raise FOC, add weight to the front or remove it from the rear:
- Point weight — the biggest lever. Stepping from 100gr to 125gr or 150gr moves FOC several points.
- Insert weight — swap aluminum for brass or stainless (10–20gr up to 50–100gr systems).
- Lighter fletching — three low-profile vanes (~18gr total) instead of heavy feathers or four-fletch configurations.
- Lighter nock — a standard nock instead of a 20–30gr lighted nock keeps rear weight down.
- Shorter shaft — cutting length moves the balance point proportionally forward (and stiffens dynamic spine).
To lower FOC, run the same list in reverse — lighter points, standard inserts, heavier rear components.
FOC and Spine Are a Package Deal
Here's the part that trips people up: adding point weight makes your arrow act weaker in spine.The extra mass up front makes the shaft flex more as the bow accelerates it.
